On March 17, 2020, the day before upper secondary education went to distance, some students at Strömstad Gymnasium got to produce hand sanitiser together with chemistry teacher Johanna Persson. Johanna says in an interview with the Swedish newspaper Expressen that the corona pandemic's progress had caused a lack of hand sanitiser, which gave her the idea of ​​producing her own together with the students.

The sanitiser was made from the World Health Organization's recipe, consisting ethanol, hydrogen peroxide and glycerol. The ingredients were already available at the school and were enough for 16 bottles, which were provided with warning text and table of contents, before being delivered to Strömstad Municipality a few days later.

The final product was named "Tegnell Tears", after the chief epidemiologist at the Public Health Agency, Anders Tegnell. An idea that came from the students.

- I don't remember exactly how it went, but we discussed what it should be called and then the name came up. It just felt right, says Intza Lopetegui Arambarri, one of the students who participated in the production of the disinfection.

Why "Tegnell Tears"?

- We thought that Tegnell probably had a tough time at work, because there must have been quite a lot to do given the current situation, says Inzta and continues:

- We are Tegnell's fans, he is fighting hard for Sweden's best.

How did it feel to be a part of this project?

- It was very educational – it felt good to do something that helps others. Instead of doing experiments that are just for your teacher's assessment. Now we were able to do good and contribute something to the community during this difficult time, says Inzta Lopetegui Arambarri.
